The rise of blogs and e magazines has fragmented public awareness like never before. The dominance of social networks like facebook and twitter has blurred the line between editor and reader. Graduate students in this field have the opportunity to do research that will make a meaningful contribution to answering questions that practitioners in the field are obsessing about right now. It's any pr exec's wildest dream: having a message catch fire and spread overnight across the world via the internet.

But what is it exactly that makes a message go viral? can viral messages be engineered and controlled? are there negative impacts to having a campaign go viral? is the loss of message control worth the global notoriety? much research needs to be done to answer these questions. Content analysis of viral messages can yield a wealth of material for grad students. Marketers in all industries are rushing to establish facebook pages and are tweeting their every move. But promoting campaigns on social media does little good if you've got no friends or followers.

What kinds of consumers friend or follow commercial personae on social networks? what are they looking for? how does friending behavior breakout by age, income, ethnicity and other important demographics? many pr practitioners wish they had the answers to questions like these. Integrated marketing communications has been a catch phrase now for almost two decades. What are the best practices for integrating social media messaging into a company's overall marcom strategy? how do social media messages reinforce or detract from the general campaign's communication goals? what strategies should be used to plan the timing of social media campaigns in product and service roll outs? this field is in its infancy and ripe for useful research by graduate students. We know that hot videos on youtube and other internet video services can cause a story to break through to the traditional print and broadcast media. What kind of popular internet videos wind up gaining traditional media coverage? what are some of their pertinent characteristics? content analysis and interviews with editors could be the source of valuable insights in this important media phenomenon. Entries are judged on their contribution to the advancement of research based knowledge in the field of public relations practice, philosophy, education and/or professional development.

Entries should test or develop theory within the public relations context systematically test an applied public relations principle, case study or practice analyze a legal, historical, or societal question in the field or critically review an issue relevant to public relations practice, research and/or teaching. Potential significance of the study and quality of the research methodology and written presentation are also judged. A blind judging procedure is followed so please pay close attention to the rules.

Application form must be completed online and submitted at w.instituteforpr.org since the judging is blind, it is important that you include the final title of your thesis or project in the application form, and that same title in the paper you submit. The paper should not contain any reference to the authors name, the advisors name, the educational institution or other identifiable information. Leaving such identification visible in the thesis will be grounds for disqualification. Your actual thesis or written project must be written in english language, submitted electronically, and in one file microsoft word or other standard word processing program. Email submissions to jenn moyer are strongly encouraged, but we will accept submission by cd or dvd.

Include an executive summary of your thesis or project, written in english, as a separate electronic file. The executive summary should not contain any reference to the authors name, the advisors name, the educational institution or other identifiable information. Leaving such identification visible in the executive summary will be grounds for disqualification. A letter of endorsement from a public relations faculty member of the students school attesting to the eligibility and qualifications of the entry must be included in the application packet. This letter must also be submitted electronically by the deadline, but in a separate file from the actual thesis or project. All entries become the property of the institute for public relations and cannot be returned. By entering the competition, you grant the institute permission to publish your case on its website and through any other means.

In public relations, there is a growing body of knowledge, but still plenty of gaps where really interesting critiques, projects and dissertations can be developed. Although the tutor can offer guidance and inspiration on topic choices, candidates must realise that they cannot produce good work if they simply ask someone else to give them a topic. Whats more, the real world increasingly wants people who can not only solve problems, but identify problems that need to be resolved.  choosing a public relations topic demonstrates such skills if you read widely and have engaged with your studies, you should have a list of different areas where additional reflection and research would be interesting and of value.
