In the life of an adolescent, stress can derive from various factors, at any place, time or situation. Similarly, any force, circumstance or event that forces a person to alter his current state in order to accommodate the change is generally referred to as a stressor. The primary stressor in the life of a teen typically boils down to his/her school, social, and personal life.

Let’s begin with the most important area from an adult’s perspective anyway , school. However, mountains of assignments, usually during a time crisis due to lack of management, are sources of stress. Since grades have a significant influence on their futures, teens sometimes push themselves far beyond their natural ability to handle stress. This kind of stress is especially escalated during critical times like the term of a final exam, or a period of speculated pop quizzes. Furthermore, high expectations resting upon the tender shoulders of a teen by parents or teachers continue to contribute to the s word. Whether it’s the desire to fit in , or getting involved in a peer group, or possibly even going on a first date, the teen years are simply put, a mess of stressors. Adolescents are exceptionally prone to the feelings of frustration, loneliness, alienation, and so on. Thus, having a strong social structure makes them feel more loved, secure, and happy.

In order to achieve this, teenagers are unnecessarily stressed to have the perfect hairstyle, latest fashions, keep up with the fads and gossips. While reading this it may sound superficial, but to a teenager this is an unavoidable burden. The burden to be popular, good looking, sociable, or to even just feel normal isn’t a simple task. It could be a specific career, scholarly award, sum of wealth, or any other object we associate with success. Though this natural desire to succeed isn’t at all a negative thing, it does indeed light the fires of stress. Other personal stressors could be as simple as putting up with the family or even the issue of puberty. Unknown to most, there are two kinds of stress we experience: acute stress and chronic stress actually there’s a third group called episodic acute stress, but we won’t dwell in that. Acute stress is a temporary, short lived form of stress that is actually necessary for our body to function effectively. Contrary to popular belief, short periods of acute stress give the body a quick bout of energy and motivation.

In other words, it jolts the body from its dormant so we can accomplish more tasks. A short period of stress, sandwiched between sufficient periods of rest has been proven to bolsters and strengthens the immune system. Here’s an interesting bit of information to prevent you from falling asleep after reading this extremely draggy essay as well! there’s a very special process of stress response in the human body called the flight or flight mechanism. It is a set combination of instructions the body activates during times of immediate danger. What i have intentionally left out before is the presence of physical stressors in our lives. Since teenagers today, more often than not, live in a safe secure environment, our senses towards some stressors like disasters, bad weather and predators have been significantly dulled.

The flight or flight response is an effect of stress triggered to counter the latter. Even though mankind no longer has to face mountain lions or saber toothed tigers as part of their daily routine, the response is still very much alive in our system. Among the effects of this immediate physical stressor is increased heart rate to increase the flow of oxygen in muscles , pupil dilation to improve vision , tensing of muscles to prepare the body to attack or escape , and the decrease of blood flow to the skin area to prevent major blood loss should and injury occur. These effects of stress helped out ancestors survive potentially lethal encounters thousands of years ago. With the threat of predators out of the way, chronic stress has become the most dangerous form of stress in the lives of teenagers today. Chronic stress is the name given to the buildup of stressors over a prolonged period of time.

Unless the source of the stressor is terminated, chronic stress continues to torment the individual, leaving very severe implications in its wake. A teenager may experience a sudden drop in their grades, uncontrollable sorrow, aggression, withdrawal from society, fatigue, mood swings, and general irritability. Teenagers suffering from chronic stress tend to be perpetually unhealthy and unhappy. If left unattended, this massive buildup of stress may lead to a mental breakdown, or at the very worst case scenario, suicide.

The way our life is integrated into the world around us, we simply can’t rid ourselves of stress, the same way our ancient ancestors couldn’t avoid the snakes and tigers in the darkness.
