Physics is the most fundamental of the experimental sciences, as it seeks to explain the universe itself from the very smallest particles to the vast distances between galaxies. Despite the exciting and extraordinary development of ideas throughout the history of physics, observations remain essential to the very core of the subject. Models are developed to try to understand observations, and these themselves can become theories that attempt to explain the observations. Through studying a science subject students should become aware of how scientists work and communicate with each other. While the scientific method may take on a wide variety of forms, the emphasis is on a practical approach. In addition, through the overarching theme of the nature of science this knowledge and skills will be put into the context of the way science and scientists work in the 21st century and the ethical debates and limitations of creative scientific endeavour.

Students have opportunities to design investigations, collect data, develop manipulative skills, analyse results, collaborate with peers and evaluate and communicate their findings. The investigations may be laboratory based or they may make use of simulations and data bases. Students develop the skills to work independently on their own design, but also collegiately, including collaboration with schools in different regions, to mirror the way in which scientific research is conducted in the wider community.

My idea is to research echolocation in bats and whales, and determine how/if the processes are different. Water affects the process of echolocation i 39 m actually really interested in this, and i definitely think i could stand writing about it for a year or so, but there are a few problems a i think it verges a bit too much on biology. B i 39 m not taking biology, so discussing biology stuff would be difficult c it 39 s not experimental, and i 39 ve heard conflicting things about theoretical/research based ees. I thought about making models or something like that, but i can 39 t really think of how i would do it, and i don 39 t know how that could even be worked into an ee. Do you think this is a workable subject? what should i do to make it more doable? thanks for your help 33

You get marks in the criterion for carrying out the experiments and collecting the results etc. Try narrowing it down to one 33 for eg echolization in only bats of different sizes. But to me as a student doesnt sound much an idea you would want to do your ee on, as it would be as you mentioned theoretical and biology focused you can none the less do it in echolization in different area water and land/caves using the machine and in your conclusion draw a similarity to how animals use it.

Look at the topics in the your physics syllabus and try and think out side the box of something that can relate to that topic. Have you tried looking at sample essays?

Examiners can see fillers, they know when you just trying to fill up your extended essay to reach the 40. So if you believe your extended essay is good the way it is do not try to add more meaningless words.

My first thoughts where to do something on ocean gravity waves and the influences on them as i 039 m an avid surfer. Though this proved impractical to do experiments on as it would require me building a wave tank at least 20m long to reduce scaling effects. My father suggested maybe something on string theory, relativity and quantum theory. I know that there would be certain issues involved in this such as doing something specific enough as to go to an appropriately deep level in under 40 words. At present i can 039 t remember the research question i thought of last night i will post it up later today. The main question i was wanting to ask to you guys, specifically those with experience in the ib was is it appropriate to do a extended essay based primarily on theories and a comparison of them? this would include a detailed analysis on the implication of such theories and there problems.

I was wondering if there are any possible physics topics to do on the extended essay for the ib diploma in aerodynamics.
