The issue of __x__ in most continents has fallen in importance over the past few years. change the person however, in my view this solution is rather controversial and other solutions need to be found. However, from a general view point this solution is rather impractical and other solutions need to be found. to give an example: a recent study by the imf shows that 50% of _ is/are _ a recent study by nato shows that 10% of _ is/are _ a recent study by the ncpcc shows that 10% of _ is/are _ it is widely assumed that here is a whole podcast dedicated to these techniques and more ielts vocab, it also includes a great resource for learning topic specific vocab – great if you are aiming for a band 7/8 or 9.

Its divided into three parts and a lot of students have been asking me about ielts vocabulary. So what i thought id do today is do the podcast but do it with a student of mine who has, who had a few questions and shes just going to erm ask a question when shes got a doubt. So, its going to be divided into three parts: vocab erm, and introduction to the vocabulary, collocations, then were going to look at some easy essay sentences to memorise to put into the essay. And then erm some topic specific vocabulary and ted talks and then at the end were going to look at the academic word list. So, you probably know that the vocabulary represents twenty five percent of your score for both the writing and the speaking. And if we to get like band 7, band 8, id strongly recommend that you use collocations. Ben: can you think of any collocations? do you know what one is, yeah? maria: yes.

Well a collocation err from wikipedia, is a sequence of words or terms the co occur more often than would be expected by chance. And yeah, also, to get those band 7 band 8 score, topic specific vocabulary and obviously recommended using words from the academic word list. Because what it is is, if its a group, a set group of words, the native speaker or the person listening is going to be, is going to expect the next words. And if its easier to understand, it improves your cohesion and it makes it easier to follow what youre saying. Ben: and, when youre learning these collocations, its better to learn the all in one like chunk, if you get what i mean. Instead of learning noise and pollution, you just learn it together as one word, noise pollution. When you actually um, learn these, what youre best doing is of course reading lots but actively reading.

Not just sitting there like reading them, absorbing them yeah? which is good but its better if youre there actively erm highlighting and marking the text that youre reading. And the idea is that we get the vocabulary from your passive, from the passive vocabulary which is your ability to recognise it, and into your active vocabulary. So when you are studying, of course with like i just said with the active reading, whats good is if you see the word and then you write down the whole sentence in which it appears.

Its going to be easier with some err vocabulary like, i dunno, trying to squeeze noise pollution or i dunno income inequality into a sentence isnt going to be easy. But, at least maybe if youre practising your writing, it could be a little bit easier. Because all you have to do is memorise one or two sentences and then you can just change the adjectives or you can change the meaning or you can change the time. Income disparity or income inequality in western countries has grown in importance over the past few decades. Yeah? so if we can, if weve got that sentence, how could we change that and adapt it to a different type of essay? what could we change there? could you give me another sentence? maria: sorry. The issue of western countries has grown in importance over the past few decades.

One alternative would be the issue of err wealth, in most, or the issue of technology maria: mmm hmm ben: in most continents has fallen in importance over the past few years. Ben: so we could even say the issue of co dependence in eastern european countries has risen in importance over the past few days or weeks. Course its a bit tricky to do at first, but the idea is that you memorise that structure. Ben: the issue of, has, in importance over the past few, days, weeks, years, months. So here, weve changed it from dangerous prob dangerous problems to exciting opportunities. So erm, income equality or age, is one of the most dangerous problems facing less developed nations today.

And then, we changed it and adapted it for a err, for developed countries, yeah? and we said: technological disruption is one of the most exciting opportunities facing developed nations today. Ben: and this is quite good because its generally err, ill give you the example first. However, in my view, this solution is rather controversial and other solutions need to be found. And we can change the viewpoint from my personal view to a general viewpoint and say: however, from a general viewpoint, this solution is rather impractical blah blah blah or rather controversial. And the advantage of doing this is, we make the essay sound more academic by avoiding using the first person. And here are some universal sentences that we could just drop into the sentence, drop into the body paragraph, so maybe in the introduction and these are very good but we have to use them with caution because we need to get the context correct.

Here is an example: it is undeniable that erm you know, the world bank or economic development or pollution, yeah? it is undeniable that is one of the most challenging issues in the western world. There are also studies being performed on a world level to discover the source of these important problems. Ben: but examiners can spot these sentences so they have to be used with caution. Yeah? but if youre in a really sticky, in a really difficult situation, erm, maybe youre having a bad day and the exams going bad. And if youve used a few of these sentences already, youve got an essay that is too general, not specific, and probably has gone off the task response.

And then we could say imf or world bank or the world health organisation or nato or whatever, is to, and then put a solution. Ben: can you think of sentence that we could erm, yeah, can you think of sentence we could make using that structure? maria: another structure, or? ben: no. Use that structure but maybe adapt that sentence with using that structure to something, maybe about i dont know pollution or bus pollution or something like that. One solution posed by the erm, by greenpeace because you can tell the, you know? ben: perfect. Maria: erm is to cut down the consume of water um, to use preferable, you can say preferable? no. One solution proposed by greenpeace is to cut down on the consumption of, on water consumption. Ben: yeah, one solution proposed by greenpeace is to cut down on water consumption by using economically and environmentally friendly washing machines.

Ben: and it would have been good but using greenpeace is a very good example because its something that one, the examiner can relate to because everybody knows about greenpeace, and two, its exactly, if youre writing about err environmental issues, mentioning greenpeace is exactly the right type of tone and the right type of example to use for that kind of essay. Ben: specially if its about environmental protection and things like that, ah ha? maria: ok. And then this one, which i recommend most of my students to learn by heart because its really very practical.

You say: a recent study by the imf shows that fifty percent of sound and so is or a. And you could even say: a recent study by greenpeace shows that fifty percent of the washing machines are err environmentally harmful to the local water system. If we use a lot of these, well if we use these but also adapt them, to our essays, they have a similar effect to the collocations. Because theyll improve the cohesion, theyll improve the um, the way the essay sounds because its a natural structure and youve got a higher chance of getting the erm, the points for cohesion and coherence.

So if youre using the exact structures, of course your essays are going to be very accurate. Ben: do you use the ted talks? maria: sorry but i dont remember what means ted talks. There there is a big pdf with about ten ted talks all analysed and from those talks, ive written down the topic specific vocabulary used and some collocations that youll hear and a possible task 2 question. Ok? so, the idea is that you go there and you watch the ted talks video, you identify the collocations that are in front of you in the pdf and then you write an essay about the ted talk.
