The city is portrayed as a place for interpersonal meetings, historical power games, and global politics.

Above all, city walks  poses thoughtful questions around precisely what spending one’s life in an ever expanding urban environment entails. amidst a labyrinth of demolished walls and overgrown bamboo, video installation intercourses is screened. Danish artist jesper just came up with the idea of filming in hangzhou when he visited the city’s replica of paris. Numerous ghost towns have been erected, and remain gapingly empty, awaiting the moment when the country’s tiger economy makes another leap forwards. Contemporary cities transform at an incredibly rapid rate, provoking heated discussions around migration, urbanization and cultural belonging. How can we manage the complex relations that extend beyond national borders? how do those relationships affect urban life? by 2008, more people lived in cities and urban centres than in rural communities for the first time in the history of humanity. The primary theme in city walks  is to involve artists who depict the notion of how it is to live in and maintain oneself in a city. Jesper just, sophie calle, hala elkoussy, carlos garaicoa, william kentridge and lisa torell are all interested in how the urban space is experienced.

We encounter lived experiences – either staged or self perceived – in their artworks. The artists view the urban setting as a collection of powers acting uponthe individual.the artists display a great sensitivity to the state of mind created by living in a city, almost as if they are feeling the city itself. They listen to the whisperings of the city walls, the layers of history to which they have borne witness, noting which sensations arise when a hand touches a stonewall worn down over time by all the bodies to have leaned up against it. the exhibition creates a space within the space. Johannesburg serves as the backdrop for the tale of south africa’s political history. We visit the bronx in new york city in the early 1980s, far from its contemporary status as a tourist destination.

She depicts the possibility of each individual creating a living space in a city and country lacking sufficient social involvement and infrastructure. Her idea is to create a story from the ground up, with the everyday experiences of the common individual serving as the starting point. The bonniers konsthall exhibition is the first time elkoussy exhibits in stockholm.

in search of a city in the papers of sein 2011 is a film and a collection of photographs and books. We experience cairo’s history through a voiceover narration and the female protagonist sein, whose identity shifts amongst characters throughout the film. The film transports us through the city’s winding streets, through both public and private spaces. 200 years of history between local egyptians and foreigners, particularly those related to british and french colonial rule, creates the foundation of the story.

The story maintains that cairo was built according to european standards in order to make an impression on europe. Sein is a female flaneur, wandering about contemporary cairo, recalling memories and historical events. The artist has used past events, travelogues, literature, journals and letters as her raw materials.

A recurring theme in hala ekoussy’s artistic work is her critical insight into the contemporary political and social system. She poses questions through the use of a poetically charged language, one where forgotten, disregarded stories are brought to life. Myths and legends room: the mount of forgetfulness 2010 stage set and hd video projection 25 min. , bronze and photograph the mount referred to in hala elkoussy’s myths amp legends room – the mount of forgetfulness is mokattam hill, a familiar site in cairo next to the old centre, also known for some recent earthquakes that killed hundreds of people living at its foot.

It figures in an obscure caireen myth of the 11th century in which it is said to be granted the root of paradise by the lord himself. In elkoussy’s film it is visited by the main protagonist, rawi arabic for storyteller , who looks down from it upon contemporary, smoggy cairo and sees that old stories are dying out. His aim – and elkoussy’s – is to save these stories, some of which are actually told and staged in the film through a number of reoccurring actors. For example, in just one of the stories accompanied by specially made music on instruments that were traditionally used by cairene storytellers, a mother grieves over her dead husband while she refers to the dictatorial reign of gamer nasser.
