This course will give you confidence using english for work, study and socialising. You will develop your english language skills in writing, reading, speaking and listening and take the entry 3 cambridge esol reading and writing exams. Your tutor will decide from a range of topics, and ask you what topics you want to cover. Topics include: life in different countries and the uk plan and write formal letters plan and write short reports write a cv and supporting statement use online dictionaries and other reference sources use the internet to research a mini project do online language activities write documents and use non text elements to enhance presentation. what level is the course and do i need any particular skills? this is a lower intermediate course taught at entry 3.

To do this course you need to be able to: write a short paragraph using capital letters and full stops read and understand short, straightforward texts on familiar topics correct mistakes in written work use an english english dictionary follow spoken instructions, speak in a discussion on a familiar topic and ask and answer questions it is also useful if you can do basic word processing and use the internet. how will i be taught, and will there be any work outside the class? class work will sometimes be in pairs or small groups, and sometimes as a whole group. are there any other costs? is there anything i need to bring? you will need a pen, some lined a4 paper and a file to keep your work in.

Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop in sessions. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate.

At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will give you verbal feedback as a group during the session, and written feedback on paper exercises you do. You will decide individual learning goals with your tutor and see your progress over the term by keeping a folder of work. There will be informal tests, practice exams and the reading and writing exams at the end of term.

You will be able to talk to your tutor in one to one meetings about your learning tutorials or ask to speak to the tutor. what is involved in studying this course?

depending on the level you choose, the english that you'll learn will help you to: lots of english language students struggle with their writing. I've found that using letters or emails as part of a weekly task either at home or in class can greatly benefit students. Below are links to letters we have used with our entry 2, entry 3 and level 1 esol students in preparation for cambridge esol exams. 6 points for sentences and general grammar 3 points for words, spelling and punctuation this gives a total of fifteen marks and allows students to clearly see which area of their writing needs working on. All these letters have been saved in 39 word 39 meaning that they can be changed, simplified, or altered in anyway. From january 2015, the new esol qcf qualifications and credit framework qualifications will replace the existing nqf qualifications.
