Harmon, marian university indiana , [email protected] michael lombardo, anna maria college massachusetts , [email protected] the american catholic life and thought section welcomes papers that address all aspects of american catholic history and theology. The convention theme for 2016, liturgy + power, presents an opportunity to explore how individuals and movements have experienced the intersection of liturgical practices with power and empowerment. The focus of such papers could examine – but should not be limited to – liturgical and sacramental practice in the colonial and pre colonial periods the relationship between liturgy and social justice, such as in the civil rights movement, or as realized in the liturgical movement lay ecclesial and spiritual movements e.g. Catholic action, catholic worker, charismatic catholics, benedict option, use of the extraordinary form of the mass the context of the western vocations crisis and the rise of lay leadership at the local, national, and international levels and generational approaches to questions of leadership and power in the church.

We encourage that liturgical practices be considered broadly, in that sacraments and sacramentals, para liturgical practices, devotions, development of marian feasts and interest in patron saints, and various revisions of the roman missal be considered as opportunities for exploring the convention’s theme. anthropology, psychology and religion

University of scranton, [email protected] the ethics section welcomes all proposals in the general fields of theological ethics or moral theology, at a theoretical or applied level, but will give preference and priority to those papers that attend to the theme of this year’s annual meeting, liturgy + power. In particular, we welcome proposals that explore the ethical dimension of this theme’s specific points of focus: liturgy’s bearing upon 1 the power dynamics within ecclesial structures, 2 the capacity of the church’s members to act with love and justice in the world, and 3 the human person’s encounter with the power of god in christian community. More generally, this year’s theme naturally lends itself to studies on the ethics of moral formation, communal identity and practice, the role of grace in human flourishing, and the struggle for social justice as a dimension of the church’s mission. However, we welcome proposals on any topic that fruitfully intersects with the convention theme, whether it be from the standpoint of sacramental ethics, catholic social teaching, liberation theology, feminist ethics, virtue ethics, sexual ethics, family ethics, disability ethics, the ethics of race and privilege, bioethics, or ecological ethics. Please submit a proposal of 300 words in the body of an e mail message directed to both conveners. Include your institutional affiliation if any , contact information, and current status assistant, associate, phd.

This consultation is seeking papers that will generate dialogue on the possibilities/impossibilities of inter communion in light of the formative power of the eucharist/holy communion in catholic and evangelical/baptist/free church traditions. Within these traditions, there are, of course, diverse understandings of holy communion, which is often, though not in all cases, construed as an ordinance rather than a sacrament. As explained in the conference call, the theme has three broad areas: liturgical practice and ecclesial structure, liturgy in the relation of the church and the world, and the liturgy in relation to god and god’s power. Some possible intersections with the conference theme are listed as prompts: feminisms, gender and sacred space universal church particular identities proposals of approximately 300 words should include one’s current position, institutional affiliation, and cts membership status.
