Ukela is pleased to announce that the winner of the 2015 article competition is matthew henderson, a a postgraduate student currently studying for the gdl at city university, london. Matthews winning essay on the topic of the greenest government ever? was felt by the judges to be an extremely polished and crisp analysis using a good range of examples and some comparative material. They added that matthews essay was selective in the ground covered but used material to good effect and worked towards a strong conclusion. The ukela andrew lees essay title for this year was: in uk environmental law today, politics and law do not mix. Discuss. the judges, drawn from top academics in the field, selected jessica allen from nottingham university as the winner. Jessica wins a sponsored place at the annual ukela conference in edinburgh worth 163 200 and the opportunity to her essay published in e law. Jessica allen is a student from blackpool who is currently studying law with french and french law at the university of nottingham and has just finished her first year as a law undergraduate.

After discovering the ukela opportunities through a law school announcement, she was keen to look into areas of law outside the core modules included in her degree. Jessica researched environmental law, with a particular interest on the european comparative, and has since written an article for 'advocate', the university law magazine where she has been elected as an editor for the upcoming year, and a student submission for ukela in addition to partaking in the andrew lees prize competition. The deadline for receipt of submissions is tuesday 26 january at 4pm with no exceptions. Otherwise, case law, statutes, text books or any other resource cited as legal authority counts towards the four authority limit. You do not need to enter the moot competition to take advantage of the training, nor do you need to attend the training before you enter the moot.

This training, kindly organised and run by no5 chambers, is available on 11 january in london, 14 january in bristol and 15 january in birmingham. all dates will run between 5pm and 6pm. Note that priority for the limited places will be given to ukela members so please quote your membership number when booking. The 2015 moot finals were held on 10 march, kindly hosted by kings college london and sponsored by no5 chambers. The winners of the senior competition were caroline daly and charles streeten, pupils from francis taylor building whilst the junior competition was won by abigail scott and amy woolfson, students from open university. Congratulations must go to the winning teams and the worthy runner's up in both competitions. The standard of entry this year was particularly high and all entrants are to be commended on the hard work they put into their entries. Junior winners with lord carnwath the moot finals were held on june 11th and we are delighted to announce that the winners were navida quadi and daniel webb of lincoln's inn junior moot and rachel jones and alex greaves of francis taylor buildings senior moot.

the winning essay will receive a $10 cash prize and an offer of publication with the vermont journal of environmental law. at the discretion of the reviewing editors, additional submissions may also receive offers of publication. The white river flows through the village of south royalton and borders the campus of vermont law school.

The idyllic waterway embodies the journals view of the field of environmental law. The wide channeled river brings the local community together, while also flowing through the heart of the state of vermont, until finally connecting to a larger river system progressing through many other states to reach the atlantic ocean. So too, the journals broad view of environmental law is meant to illuminate environmental matters and issues at the local, state, federal, and international levels.

Applicants are invited to submit original essays addressing any relevant topic in the fields of environmental law, natural resource law, energy law, environmental justice, land use law, animal law, and agricultural law.

eligibility and judging criteria
the competition is open to all students currently pursuing a degree j.d. Submissions written as a class component, as a journal requirement, or otherwise for academic credit are acceptable. All submissions should: address a relevant topic in environmental law be between 15 30 double spaced pages in length contain accurate blue book citations in footnote form adhere to standard conventions of american grammar and spelling display original work and research that has not been previously published all submissions will be reviewed by the editors of the vermont journal of environmental law.
