There was a point where i would definitely consider myself a borderline overachiever some would say i had already crossed the line.

Thankfully, throughout the years i have learned to use my perfectionism in ways that will help me, not hurt me. Overachievers strive for success in everything they do, and with all the extracurriculars i was in, being the best and succeeding in everything would have taken a miracle. All the hours of hard work in all of these activities were starting to take its toll on me. What i did in high school would affect not only my college years, but also the rest of my life. It was the winter of my sophomore year when the truth i had been avoiding my whole life hit me. It wasn’t that i wasn’t trying at all, because in the back of my mind i still knew decent grades in high school were necessary for the colleges i was interested in. It started out with quitting band and show choir and only missing a few days here and there.

Our school had rules on attendance and with my recent track record i was breaking those rules. There was one member of the faculty that would have had me out of there in a heartbeat. Before she was able to get her wish, i was blessed with a very important person that has changed my life forever. My guidance counselor believed in me and at the time i needed that much more than being expelled from high school. She gave me the second chance i needed get me through my rough patch and show my true potential. Washington said, success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life… as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed. While i wasn’t able to attend the actually school anymore, i was still able to receive my actually high school diploma at dmacc.

Would i even have gone to college? it doesn’t matter though, because i was given a second chance. Now, i am in my second year at dmacc and transferring to isu next semester to finish my bachelor’s degree, and if everything goes according to plan, my master’s as well. My guidance counselor not only blessed me with the gift of a second chance, but taught me the power of second chances as well.
