Importance of Helping Others Essay Text

Jonathan Friesen - Writing Coach

Helping others could make another person feel better either inside, or about them self. It could be from helping a senior citizen cross the street, to saving someones life on september 11th, 2001 a new york city firefighter by the name of christopher blackwell, passed away in the collapse of the world trade center. Blackwell and his fellow firefighters, died in their line of duty, which was to help people get out of the burning twin towers alive. Blackwell along with another 360+ fire fighters gave up their lives to help others вќ. Blackwell and his whole family of firefighters worked together to save the innocent civilians on that unbearable day.

Last football season i played with ryan blackwell, the son of the hero, and when he missed his football practices that week, all i could do was try and think of a way to help ryan and his family feel better. So my mother and i both worked together in making them a desert and giving them a card of our love towards the family. In the inside it felt good, knowing that we tried to help a family through hard times, but nothing can replace what they lost that faithful day.

People are selfish by nature, however we have demonstrated times of great sacrifice when such sacrifice is needed. helping other people is an act most of us perform without even thinking about it. For centuries neighbors have help other neighbors, families have helped other family members and internationally, governments have given other countries governments advice, food, medical care, military help or financial support. We live in a country that has always been there for other countries that have needed our help whether they have wanted it or not. Have you ever thought about how selfless americans are in a time of war or great national tragedy and how selfish we are in times of peace? this might be because in times of peace we are so involved with ourselves that we have no time to think about the needs of others and in time of war we think only about the problem before us. Our men and women have fought in many wars on foreign soil to ensure others freedom. We have fed underprivileged countries of the world, often forgetting that we have hungry people right here in our own backyards.

We offer medical care to countries that cant care for their own, though here we have many people who cant obtain medical treatment due to the high costs of medical insurance. Our government also gives other governments funds to help run their countries, doing all this and not asking for anything in return. One good example of this is the iraqi freedom conflict our country is involved in today. We are there under the premise of freeing the iraqi people from the genocide they have suffered under the leadership of saddam hussein.

We are also ensuring our freedom and the freedom of the world by taking hussein out of power and crushing his rein of terror. Britain is fighting right along side of us our two countries have always helped one another in times of need. During that last century, hundreds of thousands of young men and women have died in many wars freeing other countries from invaders.

It would be hard to imagine what some of these other countries would have done if we wouldnt have stepped up to the plate and taken a swing for them. Another example of people helping people would have to be tuesday september 11, 2001 and the days following. Before that date most people living in new york city would not want to get involved with anything or anyone that might distract them from their own lives, thus making new york city seem like a very unfriendly city. When i lived there, for a brief period seventeen years ago, i was surprised to see so many people looking down, not smiling at others and in general just rushing about their business. I had the impression that most new yorkers would have stepped over someone lying on the sidewalk rather than to stop and help them.

On that fateful day we saw a city of supposedly uncaring people change before our very eyes. Blood banks were overcome with people wanting to donate blood firefighters and policemen from across the nation donated their time, energy and equipment searching for survivors. Just about everyone in america wanted to help the people of new york and nobody expected anything in return.

I imagine we saw such overwhelming support and care due to the fact that the terrorists had not just attacked new york, but our entire country. This is one of the few times i have ever witnessed our nation coming together as one. John f kennedy once said, let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to ensure the survival and success of liberty. The ultimate measure of man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. This is probably why we seem to be more apt to help others in times of great tragedy then we are just to help our neighbors or others when times seem to be going well.

I just hope in time when things are going well and we are not facing national tragedy, we remember how good it felt to help others and that we do not slip back into our old ways. attention. hotessays.blogspot.com provides free sample essays and essay examples on any topics and subjects. I knew that it was important to help others, but i never experienced the joy of helping others. One activity that i did with the children was that i helped them in their reading groups. I learned that i can really enjoy getting involved in community service depending on what i do for service.

I learned that i should be thinking about other people that don’t have as much when i take time to help others and to take time and stop worrying about others. Helping a friend, family, a neighbor, or even a stranger does not necessarily mean fixing their car, or buying them lunch. Helping a person could be a small thing such as listening to their problems, offering support and advice, and walking them through an otherwise hard time. Honestly, a person can help another without realizing helping is what they are doing.

Even though i am only eighteen years of age, i have helped many people and i will continue to do so for the rest of my life. Offering assistance to others is the best way to leave a good impression on someone. Maybe it is the alleged bum on the side of the road no one can truly know if he is sincerely poor or not except him/her. Still, stopping to give him/her a happy meal or a cup of coffee can show him/her that there are good people left in the world. You may not remember his/her face, but i can guarantee that he/she will remember your kindness forever. Maybe you have a family member that is in trouble, and even though you agree with the punishment that has been given, you still feel the need to lend a helping hand. In my book everyone deserves a second chance, however if they blow that chance, then they are one their own.

There are several people that are cold hearted, but seeing the good or best in them could help them to change into a better person. Besides healing others, i can deliver a child and make a family come together despite their differences and celebrate the joy of a newborn. I can in turn use my knowledge to discover a cure for cancer or lupus, thus helping many families realize there is still hope. Mostly, however, i would be helping myself in knowing that i have helped so many people for one small act of kindness. I hope that my belief will have a lasting effect on those who read it, and that you too will see the joy in helping others and do the same.
