Prompt 2: remembrance we talked about monuments quite a bit these last few weeks mdash the many types of monuments trethewey describes, what they symbolize, and what function they serve in the community. Most exciting was our discussion of the way some structures erected along the mississippi gulf coast stand as unintentional monuments, structures that stand in remembrance of things not so nice, things that katrina survivors or even the nation might like to forget. Here's an example you cannot use in your paper: the uss hurricane camille is literally a shipwrecked tugboat carried to shore by hurricane camille decades ago, but it also functions as a monument to camille and the delayed efforts to clean up and rebuild. Later, when it is converted into a hurricane themed souvenir shop, we could say it becomes a monument to the longstanding tradition of opportunistic commercialism along the coast. The last chapter in our ss book that we have covered, talks about the life of the pilgrims. During each chapter we try to do a project of some sort that can display and apply the knowledge that we have gained from the reading. This chapter we read and learned about pilgrim life in our textbook and we took to other books to learn about what pilgrim children did.

In this unit, we completed a web hunt to learn more about the life in the colonies. Pbs has a website linked below that uses the picture below as an interactive lesson. The students use that site combined with socialstudiesforkids.com site to scavenge for information about how the pilgrims lived. We also read a couple books, sarah morton's day and samual eaton's day.

These books are very kid friendly and describe the daily life of a pilgrim child. They really enjoy learning the new phrases and words and use them frequently for a few days. There are strict requirements that there must be great evidence of historical data and research throughout their journals. They must put it together in a book and it must be handwritten and have hand drawn illustrations.

The pilgrims didn't type their diaries, did they? some of them went above and beyond the call of duty of course. Here are some samples of the amazing work they came up with: i love the learn book and the pages were so authentic on this one. One of my favorites! christian represents the common man, who is faced with the question of what will happen to him after death. He is disturbed by images of hell and chooses to leave his home and family to seek salvation. Christian shows his weaknesses in often being detoured from his goal by the forces of evil. One of the interesting points in this is that the evils that christian avoids are not connected with murder or anything else so clearly evil.

Instead, the people he meets show that laziness and greed are just as detrimental to the soul as any of those crimes. Discuss how christian’s images of hell might represent the universal fear of death. In the pilgrims progress, john bunyan allegorizes the christian principle of salvation by relating the journey of a character named christian who flees the city of destruction in search of the celestial city.

The physical obstacle and characters he meets along his way symbolize the obstacles facing a christian in the real path of life. Bunyan’s use of this creative literary genre allows him to express complex religious ideas plainly, increasing their accessibility to the reader, and thus escalating their effect. He wanted to deliver the same message in a number of ways, which increases the instructive power of the tale, as can be seen in his description of christian at the slough of despond, and then afterward at the doubting castle. The accessibility of the text is broadening by its wide ranging appeal, achieved by its tale being set very much in the real world, with its particular biblical and modern references. Worldly wiseman, whom christian meets after he has escaped the slough of despond and advises him. He invites christian to live with him in the village of morality, and describes the act of reading the bible as what happens to other weak men, who intrusive with things too elevated for them, do abruptly fall into distraction.

P 19 in this short exchange of discussion, we learn a great deal about the worldly wiseman, his disdain of christian thinking and his dismissal of evangelical counsels coming across very firmly. For example, she compares amoebae and andromeda to emphasize the immeasurable difference between herself and god and humans and the universe. Annie dillard tries to find beauty even in bad situation, like when the flood from hurricane agnes flooded the bings' house, and there was a wild mushroom found in the house. The bings loved mushrooms, and dillard liked to believe that the mushroom was put there as a consolation prize from the flood. Main characters: for the most part, the only character in this book is annie dillard, who lives in solitude, immersing herself in nature's wonders and books. In most chapters, she had an epiphany at the end of it that relates to existentialism. Setting: this story takes place around tinker creek in the blue ridge mountains near roanoke, va.
