Do Online Homework Systems Improve Student Performance Text

Jonathan Friesen - Writing Coach

The time that students spend engaged in homework outside of class has generally been found to correlate positively with learning. However, with the growing class size of many basic science courses such as chemistry, hand graded homework may be unfeasible. Alternatives include ungraded homework, randomized grading, or online homework systems.

Chemistry professors from west virginia university investigated the impact of an online homework system provided by a textbook publisher on success rates in second semester general chemistry, student usage patterns, and student perceptions of effectiveness. Researchers looked at data from over 60 students and found that 7.9% more students were able to earn a c or better after the online homework system was substituted for weekly quizzes. Students felt favorably toward it as well with 85.7% of students agreeing that online homework should be used in general chemistry. Survey results showed the vast majority felt the system encouraged more frequent and regular work as well as reduced the likelihood to cram for exams. The correlation between quiz grades and exam grades, was higher than the correlation between the online homework scores and exam grades, perhaps due to an allowance of three attempts per question.

However, only 35% of students admitted to guessing most reworked questions or consulted reference materials or others as a learning strategy. Not surprisingly, 63% of students were motivated to do the online homework by grades. The authors found no overtly negative effects on student study habits or attitudes toward the course. That, coupled with the myriad positive benefits of the online homework system, suggests that this approach should be considered when hand graded homework may not be an option. The students in one section used an online homework management system ohms , whereas the students in the other section used traditional homework methods. While an ohms saves instructors’ valuable time, there is little extant research on how these systems affect students. Our study compares several performance measures and a general course satisfaction survey across the two groups of students.

The results provide some evidence that an ohms enhances students’ performance on some of the performance measures. Our results also show that there is no effect on students’ satisfaction in the course. assignment 2: using motivation to improve performance due week 5 and worth 220 points motivation is a complex subject, but its understanding and application is central to the success of management and organizational success. synthesize the concept of motivation, and examine the substantial reasons why motivation is difficult to understand. A new study from rice university and duke university researchers identified a relatively non invasive approach to improving student achievement mdash one that doesn't involve gutting the curriculum or reinventing pedagogy. The researchers found that implementing subtle, technology based changes to homework resulted in improvements in student performance on tests. The study, integrating cognitive science and technology improves learning in a stem classroom, published this week in educational psychology review. Focused on a single upper level engineering course 40 students using methods that the researchers said could easily be applied across disciplines and grade levels with minimal cost and disruption. The changes included the adoption of a software tool developed at rice called openstax tutor.

According to the researchers, the software is similar to other tools on the market that fall into the broad category of cognitive science based digital tutors, tools that are designed to differentiate instruction based on the needs of individual students. They broke students into two groups and assigned them two different types of homework on alternating weeks mdash the cognitive science based interventions one week, traditional homework the next. In any given week, half the class would receive homework that used the cognitive science approach, the other half traditional homework. The cognitive science intervention included three key practices:

providing immediate feedback on homework, with students required to read the feedback in order to receive credit spacing problems over three weeks rather than pushing them all in a single week and follow up problems assigned in subsequent homework repeated retrieval practice .
the results exceeded everyone's expectations, said report co author richard baraniuk, the instructor of the rice u course used in the experiment, in a statement released to coincide with the report's publication. These simple changes produced a larger effect than the average improvement for classroom interventions that require a complete overhaul of curricula and/or teaching methods.
