Persuasive essay on social networking: con in today’s society, billions of people across the world are accessing the internet multiple times a day. Why wouldn’t they? many people have the internet on their smart phones, and at the touch of a button can check their email, their facebook, their bank account balance, movie times, you name it. One of these things, however, usually consumes more of the user’s time than the others. Any social networking site or application, actually, whether it be facebook, twitter, myspace, or something similar, seems to easily suck up hours of a person’s day. Young children and teens are accessing these sites while at school, and as soon as they get home from school.

Adults are accessing these sites while at work and those who are married or have children are often choosing to spend time checking their walls or profiles rather than spending time with their loved ones. There is no doubt that there are certain social benefits to these sites many people say we need them to keep in touch with friends. Social networking causes children and adults to be lazy and overweight, less productive at school and work, and, ironically, causes them to be anti social. The first reason that social networking is bad for society is that it makes people lazy and overweight. About two decades ago, when people were bored, they would go outside and do something.

You could go ride a bike, take your dog for a walk, play a round of baseball, or hit the gym and exercise. Nowadays, many people just go on their phones and tweet about how bored they or scroll through a friends new pictures and click the like button a few times. Sure, social networking might give you something to do, but really, you aren’t doing anything! especially in american society, where the obesity rate has skyrocketed, the last thing we need is for our next generation is to encourage them to sit on the couch all day looking through these sites. Furthermore, while people are looking through these sites, they’re probably munching on something and snacking away. Social networking is bad because it encourages people to lounge around and become physically inactive. The second reason that social networking is bad for society is that it makes people less productive at school and work.

Some of them may not be allowed to log on to these sites at school, but many of them do it from their phones secretly during lunch or break. Furthermore, as soon as school is over, many of them log on all the way from the walk home to the time they do their homework. Say, for example, that a young girl is working on an essay, and stops to reply to a comment on her wall. Next thing she knows, she is checking the profile of the friend who left the comment and finds out her friend’s relationship status has changed. Then, she checks the profile of her friend’s ex boyfriend, and pretty soon, this young girl has wasted two hours cyber stalking her friend’s friend’s sites and messaging people to get to the bottom of who broke up with who.

Who wants to bet that the young girl is going to get a bad grade on that essay? the same can happen with adults at work. Just imagine is something similar happened to a man who was supposed to have a report done for his boss by the end of the day. Or even worse, if the boss happened to walk by and catch his employee checking his facebook.

Social networking certainly has no benefits to those who are trying to get work done at school or at their jobs. One final reason that social networking is problematic is that causes people to only talk to each other online rather than in person. persuasive speech example do social networking sites do more harm than good? here is an example of a persuasive speech topic sent in by matteo berto. Ladies, gentlemen, there has recently been a debate as to whether social networking sites do more harm than good. Personally, i believe social networking sites are harmful and do have consequences.

I have solid evidence to support my statement and so i would like to start with a true story concerning facebook a popular social networking site. Not too long ago, a girl in her teens made a friend on facebook – a chat buddy. This other unidentified friend didn’t give any personal details and one day this girl and friend met up at the mall.  the girl was never seen again. This is a serious matter because let’s say this happened to all girls – it would be chaos. Another story is that of a suicide because a person couldn’t meet up with another person on another social networking site. People – is our nation known for its numerous social networks which invade privacy and prevent outdoor activity and exercise? are our students to spend time chatting online instead of studying for future careers which make this country great? the opposition argues that social networking sites give people their own space and that these blog sites represent fun and socialisation. Well, would we not prefer our children to go outside and socialise and meet friends that they know where they live and they know their gender? did people in the 60s need social networking sites? in the olden days we didn’t express a need for an online high tech chatting system.

Social networking sites prevent youths from spending time with their parents and their siblings. Another issue about social networking sites is what if your child comes across discrimination or cyber bullying? this only adds to depression. If we are to be a happy nation we should restrict these sites to people above the age of sixteen. This is a fairly easy alternative which i am sure the majority of you would vote for. Overall, the benefits are few and the drawbacks are many – social networking sites are the centre of misconduct, less studying and unsafe blogs. Do we want our youths to have their eyes glued to computer screens or their ears plugged to headphones? we must restrict social networking sites to 16s or above! get your children outside socialising and inside studying! by matteo berto, aged 12. do you have any examples of speeches that you have given.
