It is a common emotion to students regarding the distaste of homework, but legions of teachers know better because they recognize the importance of homework in the success of students in school and outside of school. There are many reasons why homework should not be abolished as it is greatly beneficial towards the student. Homework improves the stability of the student in school allowing them to spend their time wisely and not only focus on play. It allows the teacher to acknowledge the student's weaknesses and in turn giving them an opportunity to improve and acquire new skills. Also, taking time each night to do homework is a chance for students to catch up on missed class and further reinforces the day's lessons so it is permanently etched in the student's mind where the information is stored and used when called upon. Several studies have proven that homework, in fact, does improve the stability of the student in school.

This strengthens the statement that time spent completing homework is time well spent. Rather than giving students another hour of leisure time, doing homework entitles the student to an hour of enriched education. This can greatly benefit the student, as consistently finishing homework will reap great rewards such as a favorable test score or report card.

However the campaign if likely to encounter widespread opposition and many heads acknowledge parents expect homework to be set. Some primary schools have already axed homework in favour of activities completed with parents such as trips to the museums but the trend is limited to a handful. Homework guidelines introduced by former education secretary david blunkett in 1998 state that children aged five to seven should be set an hour a week, rising to one and a half hours for seven to nine year olds and half an hour a night for nine to 11 year olds, who are approaching sats tests. At secondary level, 11 to 13 year olds should complete 45 to 90 minutes, 13 to 14 year olds should do one to two hours and 14 to 16 year olds should spend up to two and a half hours every night studying. While teachers are not forced to set homework, they come under heavy pressure to do so.

The guidelines are 'intended to give a clear idea of what is reasonable to expect at different ages'. But cecily hanlon, who proposed a motion calling for homework to be scrapped, said: 'homework is a waste of children's time, teachers' time and from what i have heard parents' think it's a waste of time as well. 'the issue of homework can damage parents and children's relationships when trying to get it all done, and ends in tears all round.' she cited the example of a primary school which handed children a pack of 45 worksheets as easter holiday homework in preparation for sats in may. 'but what about the parents who have organised a holiday? 'children should have time to play games with their friends and go out on trips with their families.

They should learn about estimating how many carrots and potatoes are needed for dinner.' often children do not receive proper feedback on the homework they complete and have to wait weeks for their marks, mrs hanlon added. 'some schools give homework to classroom assistants to mark.' children with chaotic home lives would get less help with their work than those from more stable families, she warned. So i went to work, typing up essay after essay, writing worksheet after worksheet, reading textbook after textbook, just to get it over with. My mom was in the kitchen, and wearily said that my dad was called back to the military base because one of the u.s. My school is very strict, and says that unless i was sick, out of town, or at a funeral of a member of my immediate family was i allowed to be excused from that day's homework.

I won't say that much, because i might start crying, but let's just say that this soldier had to tell my family the one thing that soldiers abhor of saying. Every family with a member in the military knows that they should always be prepared for those soldiers with news, but that doesn't mean we prepare anyways. A nightmare that you knew was haunting you, tormenting you, with facts, not fantasies. I remember soldiers saluting, people standing and sitting, and i remember making a speech in front of his casket.

I told everyone that it was homework, homework that killed this man, this amazing, loving father. 35 hours of learning a week and we still need to stay home and work on the same stuff we had already learned at school? nah. French president françois hollande proposed banning homework as part of his plan to reform the french educational system. But is he throwing out the baby with the bathwater? hollande believes homework favors the wealthy and disadvantages children from poorer socioeconomic backgrounds because wealthier parents are more likely to have the time and means to support, monitor, supervise, and assist their children when they are doing their homework. The reality of such distinctions aside, such an all or nothing approach misses the more practical problems all students face when dealing with homework the sheer volume of homework they are assigned. I’ve written about this question previously read, how much homework is too much ? and stated that there are few if any studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of piling on excessive amounts of homework on students, especially when it comes to children in elementary and middle school. When children are assigned too much homework, it taxes not just them but their parents as well.
