If you are unable to complete your dissertation by your current submission deadline, you should apply for an extension. You should complete sections one, two and three, providing as much detail as possible and submit the form to the taught student administration team. Appropriate documentary evidence to support the reasons given should be attached to the form. For example, if medical reasons are cited, a medical certificate should be attached. Each college/school/department has a clear procedure for granting extensions, including guidance on circumstances that will and will not be considered acceptable. Following a consideration of the information/documentary evidence provided, a college/school/department representative will either decide to approve or reject your application. In some circumstances, you may be asked to provice further information/documentary evidence before a final decision. Taught student administration staff are notified of the decision and will amend the central database as appropriate and you will be notified of the decision by e mail. If you request an extension that will mean you will exceed the maximum period of registration for your programme of study, you will need to apply for an extension to maximum period of registration. If your request for an extension is not approved, your original submission date will apply.

If you have not made sufficient progress with your dissertation to submit by this deadline, your school will need to make a recommendation for you at the next board of examiners meeting. If it is your first attempt at the dissertation, you will have the right to re submit to a deadline agreed by the school, and your dissertation mark will then be capped at 50% for the purposes of classifying your final degree classification. If it is your second attempt at the dissertation, the board of examiners will make a recommendation based on the marks for modules that you have already completed. If a student wishes to apply for an extension of submission, they must apply in advance for permission to do so.

Extension of submission is also granted for students where the department has recommended the student for a lower award, in order to allow students time to compile their research for submission. Please ensure that you state in the letter that the student has the right to appeal within 28 days of receiving official notice of the recommendation or decision and direct them to the appeals website for more information. If the department recommends the student for a lower award, and the student has consented to the decision, an extension may be approved so that a student can compile their current work in order for it to be examined. For these instances, the department must also complete a transfer of programme form and submit it with the extension of submission form.
