In academic writing, the author is responsible for making the text as clear as possible for the reader. An active reader will want to know what the author rsquo s aims are and how they will be achieved what the author rsquo s position is about key issues how the argument is constructed how ideas relate to each other. Good writers use signposting language to signal to the reader where these answers can be found. It is useful to divide signposting language into two broad categories: major signposts that signal key aspects of the work, such as purpose, structure, author rsquo s stance, main points, direction of the argument, conclusions.

In other words, it rsquo s the information you give about what topics are going to be covered, the order in which they come and the angle or focus of the discussion or argument. Major signposts ndash these are the words and phrases that tell your reader the purpose, structure, your position, main points, direction of the argument and signal your conclusion.

This is where you have a chance to identify the key themes of your discussion, your main argument and focus. Showing cause and effect: accordingly, as a result, consequently, for that reason, for this purpose, hence, therefore, etc.

Placing ideas in time: again, at first, at least, at length, at once, at that time, at the same time, concurrently, during this time, earlier, eventually, finally, first, second, third, etc. Summarising ideas: all in all, altogether, as has been noted, finally, in brief, in conclusion, in other words, in short, in simpler terms, in summary, etc. The aim of this study is to hellip the purpose of this thesis is to hellip this essay argues that hellip the main questions addressed in this paper are hellip this essay critically examines hellip the above discussion raises some interesting questions.

The academic phrasebank is a very useful source of help, giving numerous suggestions for opening sentences and phrases. Try making this paragraph flow correctly: sometimes referred to as transitioning, signposting can link main sections of a document, as well as smaller sections such as sentences and paragraphs. Signposts can signal stages of development or a change in ideas or arguments and provide clear clues where we're going. They can guide the reader through a text, illustrating how ideas fit together and showing the reader the sequence of the writer's thought process, argumentation or stance on an issue. Its all very well to say you should be signposting your essays or your masters dissertation.

But what exactly does this mean? take a look at the following passage.  it demonstrates what happens when you ignore the importance of signposting: professor jo carter is a renowned expert on forensic science, however, she is better known for her crime writing mysteries.  she first began writing in the whodunnit? genre when she was studying for her phd. But it wasnt until her fourth novel, and the introduction of the popular chief inspector matthius that she sprang to fame. The university will be holding its annual meeting on 5th june.  there will be a dinner with wine, and tickets are priced at £ 45.  all proceeds will go to the library fund. There doesnt appear to be any connection between these two paragraphs.  its almost as though they were collected at random.  then at the bottom of the passage was the line: professor carter will be the after dinner speaker. Now the connection between professor carter and the universitys annual meeting are made clear.  but your readers shouldnt have to work this hard to work out the connection between your paragraphs.  how do you avoid this sort of issue in your writing? have a look at the following sentence examples.  what sort of information would you expect to read next? the mp put forward forceful arguments to curb expenditure on the hospital. You can get a sense of the sort of material that ought to follow these sentences.  as the reader, you would be startled if any one of these sentences was followed by, say, a line about the film industry in 1950s los angeles.  you are expecting a particular sort of information to follow.  there is more essay guidance about sentences elsewhere in the blog. You do not need to offer a commentary on what you have already said, or what you will be saying later. In a well planned essay, this progression should be self evident from the arrangement of your work. A sound essay plan and a coherent structure will reveal the logic of your argument and the relationship of its parts. If you have, for instance, four main topics to discuss, simple state clearly what those topics are, then deal with them separately, one after the other. Each new topic should be clearly identified or defined as soon as you begin dealing with it. Remember that each paragraph should deal with just one principal stage or item of your argument.

If you wish to some light indication of structure, it is perfectly acceptable to use formulations such as the first reason the second on one hand on the other however, the main argument against this is these statements will demonstrate that you have control of your argument. Remember that although an essay may take many hours to write, it will only take a few minutes to read. Even then, skillful writers will integrate any direction indicators into their work as unobtrusively as possible. In some of the sciences it is necessary to announce in advance what you will be writing about. However, these pieces of work are likely to be closer to experimental reports than continuous prose arguments.

Similarly, in some branches of psychology or linguistics, students may sometimes be required to offer a meta critique of a written assignment. This is to demonstrate their awareness of the processes in which they are engaged. With these few exceptions, you should not normally comment on the manner in which you have written an essay. Your tutor doesnt need to know in what order you assembled your evidence, or what difficulties you encountered during its composition. Some students try to disarm possible criticism by announcing in advance how difficult the question was to answer.
